To correctly oil a handpiece the correct oiling adapter must be used. The adapter type will look similar to the coupling the handpiece fits onto.
If the correct adapter is not used the oil will not get to the required destination which results in:
- Insufficent bearing oiling which will cause excessive wear and repeated repair bills.
- Oil spraying out of water spray at next clinical use.
- Oil dripping down onto dentist wrist or onto the patient.
- Unnecessary waste of maintainence oil.

Adapter Types
Kavo

The two couplings shown are probably the most popular in Ireland. They are the Kavo (or multiflex) coupling. The one shown top is non-optic with the bottom being fibre -optic.
The correct oiling adapter will look like the one fitted to the oiling cap in the middle.
Periodically check the O-rings are ingood condition to ensure proper delivery of oil.
NSK

Shown is the current NSK fibre-optic coupling with the proper adopter fitted to the oiling cap underneath it.
This adopter is unusual as it does not have any O-ring on the outside
Sirona

This is the Sirona fibre-optic (has a light) coupling. The non-optic Sirona will be slightly shorter, will not have the end cap or thebulb.
The proper oiling adapter will have 2 O-rings and a groove as the one on the left has.
W&H

On the left is the current W&H coupling with push type collar that engages the handpiece.
Note the similar shape and thin end piece that is on the adapter underneath.
Slow / Straight / Red-Ring Handpieces

Most Straight and Slow handpieces are oiled by the same adapter which is pictured – It’s got one O-ring near the end.
Slow handpieces have got a more complex arrangement of gears and bearings requiring oil.
Sometimes, back-pressure and perhaps a pressure release when removing the adapter from the handpiece indicates the oil pathway has been blocked and the oil is not getting to where it is required. This indicates bearing failure is imminent.
Removable Head Handpieces

Some handpieces have got removable heads. In this case the slow head fits inside the end for oiling and they are oiled separately from the rest of the handpiece.
